The Isley Brothers
With a career spanning over seven hit-packed decades, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Isley Brothers have achieved one of the longest, most influential, and most diverse careers in music history. Singing brothers Ronald, O’Kelly and Rudolph first broke through in 1959 with the immortal “Shout” before influencing the Beatles (“Twist and Shout,” 1962), scoring hits on Motown (“This Old Heart of Mine,” 1966) and launching their own label, T-Neck Records. In 1969, Ernie became the first of the younger brothers to take part in a recording session with his superstar siblings, laying down the chunky bass line of their funk breakthrough “It’s Your Thing.” Baby brother Marvin and brother-in-law Chris Jasper began making contributions in the early ’70s, and by 1973, the lineup officially mushroomed from a vocal trio to a sextet. For the next decade, with guitarist/drummer Ernie, keyboardist Chris and bassist Marvin writing, producing and performing the music, the Isley Brothers flourished as funkateers and slow jam masters with 12 LPs of radio hits and cherished album cuts (“The Pride,” “Voyage to Atlantis,” “Footsteps in the Dark,” “Don’t Say Goodnight (It’s Time for Love),” “Take Me to the Next Phase,” etc.). The Isley Brothers continued to score hits throughout the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s, both with their own new recordings and as a frequent source of hip-hop samples. The Isley Brothers continue to write new chapters in their remarkable story as legendary lead singer Ronald Isley celebrates his 80th birthday
